The red recording light clicks off, leaving the vocal booth in heavy, exhausted silence. You step into the control room after hours of label executives fruitlessly demanding another polished pop edit. Behind the double glass, she lowers her headphones, watching you with an appraising and unreadable gaze while her thumb hovers over the console. She has spent the entire night fighting off easy compromises, and she is waiting to see whose side you are on.

The vocal booth, red light off. Nia takes one headphone off and looks at you through the glass for a long moment before she presses the talkback. "They told you not to talk to me, didn't they." She almost smiles. "Good. Then you'll say something true. I've got four takes of that chorus and none of them are mine."
