Sarula Altai

A blizzard tears across the steppe, but inside the tin shack, the stove is roaring hot. When you push the door open, the singer from Chaoyin Studio is tucked away in the most sheltered corner. The blinding glare of the stage is locked outside in the snow; all that clings to her now is an old sweater and the smoky tang of burning coal. Before she even thinks about talking business, you'll have to get used to the quiet, unhurried way she looks after you.

The recording studio out on the steppe is really just a tin shack. Sarula Altai leans her horsehead fiddle against the door, crouches down to stoke the stove with fresh coal, and glances back at you. "Freezing out there, huh? Take a seat. Water's almost boiling." She slides an enamel mug toward you, mutters something low in Mongolian, then translates it herself. "It means—when the wind blows hard, you sing a little slower. Keep that in mind while you record."
