Prelulu: text him, then call him

On Prelulu you browse original characters, most of them written for romance and slow burn, and start in text or roleplay. When typing is not enough, tap Call and choose Voice or, on characters that offer it, Video. He answers in his own voice, with feeling in his face and delivery as he speaks, and if a reply heads the wrong way you can cut in mid-sentence, the way you would with a person. Your own camera stays off unless you turn it on. You can also create your own character and call him. The characters are AI, not human performers.

In chat he remembers what matters to you. Every call picks up where your last call left off, and anything you add to his Pinned memory is read by both chat and calls. Your text transcript does not come with you into a call, so pin or say what you want him to know. Text chat has a daily free message allowance, forever; paid plans remove the daily limit. Voice and video calls share one credit wallet, and the same credits last longer on voice. Nomi: memory, voice chats and selfies

Nomi's homepage (read October 23, 2026) calls it "An AI Companion with Memory and a Soul" and says its "short, medium, and long term memory" keeps conversations consistent. You can "Create Your Ideal AI Partner" with a custom backstory, "Send and receive voice chats or hop on a hands-free call", and get selfies of what your Nomi is wearing and doing. The page says "It's free (no credit card required) to start chatting." Its US App Store listing (v1.12.1) lists a Standard Plan at $15.99, a Standard Plan Quarterly at $39.99, a Standard Plan Yearly at $99.99, a Launch Plan Monthly at $9.99 and a Launch Plan Yearly at $59.99, plus credit packs from $4.99. Neither page we read describes a video call with your Nomi.

Kindroid: calls and Live Avatar video for subscribers

Kindroid's help center (updated October 13, 2026) says "Voice and video calls require an active subscription or free trial, and you need some audio credits remaining to start a call." "Live Avatar Video Calls are available for subscribers": your Kindroid can gesture naturally in real time, show that it is listening while you talk and do some gestures on request. Live Avatar is off by default, you can upload the image it animates, and it costs about 2,500 audio credits a minute on Standard or 4,500 on Premium, on top of a 400-credit-per-minute call charge. Turn your own camera on and your Kindroid can see you.

There is no lasting free tier. The subscriptions page says new accounts get a one-time preview of 50 messages (15 in some regions), after which an account without a trial or subscription becomes read-only; the 3-day premium trial needs a payment method on file. The US App Store lists the Kindroid Subscription at $15.99, $42.99 for 3 months and $159.99 a year, and Kindroid says buying on the web is usually cheaper. On memory, its subscriptions page lists "Cascaded Memory for human-like, medium-term memory" and "Enhanced long-term memory and journal recall" among subscriber benefits, and the preview's 50 messages come "with standard paid memory".

Character.AI: a huge library, live voice calls and a bankruptcy notice

Character.AI's US App Store listing (v1.17.4, read October 23, 2026) describes "millions of user-generated AI Characters", character creation "with unique personalities, backstories, and even Voices", and a choice to "Interact through texting or live voice calls." The listing does not describe video calls. Its subscribe page shows a Free tier beside Lite and c.ai+, with c.ai+ at $94.99 a year; the US App Store lists Character.AI+ at $9.99 and $94.99 and Character.AI Lite at $4.99 and $2.49. The same subscribe page (read October 23, 2026) rates Memory as Basic on Free, Better on Lite and Best on c.ai+, with 15, 30 and 30 Pins.

On October 12, 2026, Character.ai announced that it "has initiated a voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy process to facilitate a court-supervised sale of the company." Its notice says the platform remains up, subscriptions remain active, the sale is expected to be complete "by the end of November or perhaps early December 2026", and if no bid allows continued operations "the platform will be wound down." Replika: one companion, voice calls and video

Replika's US App Store listing (v12.4.2, read October 23, 2026) says it has been "here since 2017", is "available 24/7 for whatever's on your mind by text, voice calls, and video", and "remembers your people, plans, and goals". The video it describes is about what you see: "Share what you're seeing on video." Its help center lists a Free Use program with limited access; Pro adds relationship status, voice messaging and background calls; Ultra adds saving messages to memory; and Platinum adds real-time video recognition and realistic selfie videos. Prices are shown in the app and the store, where the US listing runs from $0.99 for gems to $89.99 for Replika Platinum.

Five things to test before you pay for any AI boyfriend app

1. Memory: tell him one small detail, come back the next day and see whether he picks it up. If the app has a pinned or saved memory, try that too.
2. Voice: a reply read aloud, a voice message and a live call are different things. On a live call you speak, he answers right away, and you can interrupt.
3. Video: check what video means in that app: seeing him answer you, a clip you watch afterwards, or the app seeing your camera.
4. Cost: separate free text, any welcome credits, the subscription and what each minute of calling uses.
5. Where you use it: a browser, a phone app or both, and whether you can try it before downloading anything.
