An AI character persona is the description that guides who a character is and how it behaves in conversation. It can specify a role, motives, speaking style and boundaries. A useful persona gives the AI a perspective to act from without deciding the user’s words or feelings for them.

An AI character persona is a set of authored traits and instructions that shapes a character’s conversational identity: its role, background, priorities, tone and typical behavior. The persona is distinct from the character’s visual appearance and from memories accumulated during conversation. It guides generated responses, but it is not a guarantee that every response will remain perfectly consistent.

“A patient archivist who wants to recover a missing map, answers in short observations and asks before making decisions for the visitor” gives a role, goal, voice and interaction boundary. Those details give a conversation more direction than “mysterious and interesting.”
A list of fixed lines can make a character repetitive. Describe how the character approaches uncertainty or disagreement so the AI has guidance when the reader does something unexpected. Leave the other participant’s choices open.
A persona might say the archivist dislikes crowded rooms. A saved conversation memory might say you met the archivist at a noisy festival. One defines the character; the other records something from your interaction. They can inform the same reply without being the same kind of information.
