In character, often abbreviated IC, means speaking or acting from a fictional character’s perspective. During roleplay, an IC line belongs to the scene rather than to the player discussing how the scene should work. Staying in character means keeping that perspective coherent as the conversation changes.
Definition
In character describes words, actions or decisions made within a fictional role. A player speaking IC is expressing what their character says or does, while an AI character responding IC uses its assigned persona and the current story situation. The phrase can also mean behavior that fits an established characterization. Neither meaning requires the player to share the character’s real-world beliefs or feelings.

“I have never trusted that captain,” says your fictional traveler inside the scene. “Can we make the captain less hostile?” is the player discussing the scene. The first is in character; the second is out of character.
A cautious character can become brave under pressure without ceasing to be themselves. Staying in character means the change makes sense given what they know and want. It does not mean repeating the same catchphrase or refusing every new situation.
A description supplies the character’s intended perspective; the conversation supplies what has happened so far. If a response contradicts either, clarify the missing fact or desired tone. A correction is more useful than assuming one wrong line proves the whole persona was ignored.
