Start by deciding what you want to try. For a quick hello, a short call may be enough. For a longer roleplay, establish the scene in text first so the live part begins where you want it to. This keeps your first call focused on whether you enjoy talking with that character.
How to start your first AI character video call
- Choose a character whose personality and story appeal to you. You can start with Sylus or browse the cast.
- Begin in text. Share the setting, the tone you want, and any boundaries for your fictional scene.
- Open the character's call experience and choose video when available. Check the call allowance shown before continuing.
- Speak or type a reply. You can see and hear the character without turning on your own camera.
- End the call when you choose. You can continue the story in free text chat.
Do I have to open my camera?
No. Your camera is not required for the current experience. Face-to-face means seeing and hearing the AI character while you take part by speaking or typing. On supported calls, you can choose to enable camera sharing and grant permission so the character can respond to what you show. You can keep your camera off throughout the call.
A useful first-call scene
Try this fictional prompt: "We have five quiet minutes after a busy day. Ask me one question at a time, and keep the conversation gentle." Or continue a scene you already started: "We are back at the library. You still have not answered the question I asked before we left." These are written examples, not quotations from anyone's private chats.
Notice whether the character responds to your answer and whether you like the voice, pacing and personality. There is no need to perform for a camera. A brief reminder can help when a story detail is missing; memory can support continuity but is not perfect.
A live call is different from a video message
A video message is something you watch. A live call gives you a turn: answer a question, change the scene, or ask the character to slow down.
