Barge-in means speaking while an AI is talking and having the application treat that speech as an interruption. The current reply may stop so the AI can listen and respond to the new input. Good interruption behavior also avoids treating every cough or background sound as a new turn.
Barge-in is an interruption feature in conversational voice systems: the user starts speaking before the agent’s reply has finished, and the application interrupts that reply to handle the user’s input. The system must decide whether the incoming sound is meaningful speech, background noise or a brief acknowledgment. An open microphone alone does not prove that barge-in is implemented.

Why it works
A correction during a scene
The character begins, “We leave at sunrise.” You interrupt with, “Actually, my character is staying here.” Barge-in lets that correction become the next conversational event instead of making you wait through an irrelevant speech.
Why a small sound may stop a reply
Some systems use voice activity detection to decide that a person has started speaking. Laughter, another person in the room or audio from a speaker can produce false interruptions. More careful turn detection can distinguish some of these situations, but behavior varies by application.
An interruption should change what happens next
Listen for two effects: whether the old speech stops and whether the next response acknowledges your correction. A character going silent while the app ignores your new words is not the same experience as a successful conversational interruption.

Questions, answered
Its interruption detector may be treating that sound as the start of a new user turn. Microphone placement, echo and background speech can contribute. Look for the app’s microphone or interruption controls if the behavior is disruptive.
Usually it describes a voice-system capability, not a magic word. Typing “stop” may work differently from speaking over a reply. The application decides which inputs interrupt audio playback.
Yes. Full duplex concerns the audio channel; interruption detection and turn-taking are separate parts of the experience. The AI may hear overlapping speech but still respond late or cut off too easily.
