Roleplay glossary

Lorebook

A lorebook is a collection of short notes about a story’s world, places and people that an AI roleplay app can add to the model’s prompt when they become relevant. Each entry usually has keywords: when one of them comes up in the chat, that entry’s text is inserted so the character can answer with the right lore. SillyTavern calls the same feature World Info.

Definition

What does "Lorebook" mean?

A lorebook, also called World Info or a memory book, is a set of entries that an AI chat or roleplay application inserts into the prompt dynamically. An entry pairs trigger keywords with a content field; when a keyword appears in recent messages, the app adds that content to the context for the next reply. Only the content is inserted, not the keywords or the title, and an inserted entry guides the reply without guaranteeing that the reply uses it. Lorebooks keep a long setting consistent without loading every detail into every message.

How a lorebook entry works

One entry, start to finish

Keywords: “Ashgrave”, “the manor”. Content: “Ashgrave Manor sits on a cliff above the sea; its east wing burned ten years ago and nobody goes there.” When you write “Let’s explore the manor”, the app adds that sentence to the prompt, so the character can warn you about the east wing instead of inventing a different house.

Write entries as facts, not as story

Keep each entry short and about one thing: a place, a faction, a rule of magic, a person. Give it the words you will actually type as keywords, including nicknames. Long entries crowd the context, and many apps stop adding entries once a size budget is spent, even if more keywords match.

A lorebook is not the same as memory

A lorebook holds what you decide in advance about the world. Memory holds what happened between you and a character. Prelulu has no lorebook or keyword-triggered entries: a character carries its written background, and Pinned memory is a note you write for one character that goes into its chats and calls every time, not only when a keyword comes up.

Read November 4, 2026: "World Info (also known as Lorebooks or Memory Books)" inserts prompts dynamically; it "only inserts relevant information from World Info entries when keywords associated with the entries are present"; information outside the Content field "is not inserted into context"; activation "does not guarantee its appearance in the generated output messages"; "If the budget is exhausted, then no more entries are activated even if the keys are present in the prompt."

FAQ

Questions, answered

Yes, in practice. SillyTavern’s documentation names World Info, lorebooks and memory books as one tool, and other roleplay apps use the word lorebook for the same keyword-triggered entries. The exact settings, such as how far back keywords are scanned and how many entries fit, differ by app.

Facts the character must get right but should not repeat in every reply: places, factions, side characters, history and the rules of the setting. Put the character’s own personality and voice in the character definition instead, because that should apply to every message, not only when a keyword appears.

No. An entry is only added when its keyword is matched, and an added entry still does not guarantee the reply uses it. A lorebook also does not record what happened in your chat; that is a separate memory feature, if the app has one.

No. Prelulu has no lorebook or keyword-triggered entries. When you create a character you write a background, personality and first message, and in any chat you can add Pinned memory: a note for that character that carries into both your chats and your calls. It is always included, so keep it to the details that must never be lost.
