A short example
He texts sweet messages late at night, goes quiet for days, and answers “what are we?” with a joke. Later you learn he sends the same lines to others. That mix of charm and evasion is what people mean by a player.
BookTok and romance glossary
Player
In dating slang, a player is someone who flirts with or dates several people at once, hides the others from each of them and avoids commitment. The word suggests charm used as a game, and it is usually meant as a warning rather than a compliment.
Definition
What does "Player" mean?
Player comes from the idea of playing the field. A player is attentive and charming at first, but keeps things deliberately vague: rarely introducing partners to friends, disappearing for days and changing the subject when asked what the relationship is. Dating several people openly, with everyone aware, is not the same thing; what makes someone a player is the secrecy and the mixed signals.

Examples and context
Player or casual dating
Casual dating can be honest when both people know there is no commitment yet. A player relies on the other person not knowing the truth.
What actually matters
Consistency matters more than charm. Someone whose words and actions match, and who answers honest questions honestly, is showing a green flag, a sign of a healthy relationship.
