Roleplay, shortened to RP, means taking on a character and building a story through them together with other players. Online, the story is usually written in turns by text, and a roleplayer is anyone who plays a character that way.
In roleplay each participant speaks and acts as a character, invented or borrowed from a story, and the scene grows from what each one writes. Online communities add their own vocabulary: a muse is the character someone plays, a plot is a scene two players build together, and IC and OOC separate what a character says from what the players say about the story.
One player writes: “*pushes the café door open, shaking rain off her umbrella* Sorry I’m late.” The other answers as the barista who has been waiting. Each turn adds an action and a line, and the story is whatever the two of them write next.
Roleplay communities on social media
Many roleplayers run character accounts on X, Instagram or group chats, often for characters inspired by idols or fictional casts, and write plots with other players. Each group has its own rules, so read them before you join.
Roleplay with an AI character
In AI roleplay your partner is an AI character that answers in role whenever you are ready. On Prelulu you write a scene with an original character, and when you would rather hear them, you can call them too.
Read October 31, 2026: defines RP as one or more people taking on the role of a character different from their real selves and acting out stories through them; also lists IC, OOC and OC.
