How AI Girlfriend Calls Work: Voice, Video and Cost (2026–2027)

Live voice, live video or voice notes? What five AI companion apps do when you tap call, and how each one charges. Sources dated 24 October 2026.

Call an AI girlfriend

An AI girlfriend call is one of three different things: a live voice call, a live video call where you see the character's face, or a voice message answered later. Store pages use the same word for all three. This page separates them, says what five apps document for each, and explains how each one charges for the time. If you only want to try one, call an AI girlfriend on Prelulu — text first, then call the same character.

Three things people mean by an AI call

  • Live voice call

    What happens
You talk in real time and replies come back as speech
    Why the difference matters
Feels like a phone call; interruption and turn-taking are the hard part
  • Live video call

    What happens
The same live audio, plus an avatar face that moves while the character speaks
    Why the difference matters
Presence; it needs an avatar, so not every app or character offers it
  • Voice messages

    What happens
You record, the character answers with a voice note
    Why the difference matters
Asynchronous; useful, but it is not a conversation

What each one documents

Prelulu

Prelulu's call is the product rather than an add-on: you text a character first, then call the same character. On a video call you see them and hear them answer in their own voice, their expression shifting as they speak, and you can cut in mid-sentence instead of waiting for a turn to end. Chat and calls remember separately — each call picks up where your last call left off, and the Pinned memory you write is the one note both read. Text chat has a free daily allowance, no card required. Membership starts at $9.99/month on the web ($5.99/month billed yearly, a little more inside the iPhone and Android apps) for 7,200 credits — about 60 minutes of video on characters that offer it, or 180 minutes of voice. Credit packs cost more per minute.

Kindroid

Kindroid's listing advertises real-time voice calls, and its call guide documents Live Avatar video for subscribers, from a Live Avatar Image you upload. The guide puts Standard live video at about 2,500 audio credits a minute and Premium at about 4,500, on top of a 400-credit-a-minute call charge, drawn from a monthly audio-credit balance that resets on the 1st (call guide, checked 2026-10-24).

Replika

Replika's listing says it has been around since 2017 and offers text, voice calls and video, and describes the video as sharing what you are seeing. Its help center describes real-time video recognition of your camera on the Platinum tier (help center). So on Replika, video is the companion seeing you; we did not test whether a moving companion face also appears.

Character.AI

Character.AI's listing says "Chat, call, text", and its c.ai+ plan is $9.99 a month or $94.99 a year, listing "No ads", "Best memory" and "Unlimited top models" (character.ai/subscribe, checked 2026-10-24). Its own pages describe generated video (AvatarFX) rather than a live video call, so we list live video as not stated.

Nomi

Nomi's listing leads with memory and with real-time voice messages, and its website adds that you can "hop on a hands-free call" (checked 2026-10-24). If what you want is a companion that remembers details and can talk back by voice, those are its stated strengths.

How each one charges for the time

  • Credits per minute

    Who uses it
    Prelulu, Kindroid
    What to watch
A membership funds the balance; on Prelulu, top-up packs cost more per minute than the membership; on Kindroid, live video adds credits on top of the call charge
  • Subscription

    Who uses it
    Character.AI, Nomi, Replika
    What to watch
Check what the paid tier says about calling and video before assuming either is included

The comparison that matters is minutes per dollar, and most store pages do not state it. Prelulu states its membership price, the credits it adds and the approximate video and voice minutes, because one balance also pays for creating characters. Kindroid states credits per minute. Ask each app the same question before subscribing: how many minutes of live call does one month of the cheapest membership buy?

What to try in a short trial

Two quick checks tell you more than any store page. First, interrupt mid-sentence: on a live call the character stops and answers what you just said. Second, ask something specific to this conversation — a detail only you would know to mention — and see whether the answer follows it. Neither check proves how any app is built; they tell you whether you enjoy the call.

Hear it answer before you decide

Start in free text, pick a character, then tap call and try to interrupt them. Membership is the cheaper lane for call time; check the current plans and your wallet before a long call.

FAQ

Questions, answered

Yes, but the word call covers three things. A live voice call connects so you talk in real time. A live video call does the same and shows the character's face as they answer. A voice message is recorded and answered later. Prelulu, Kindroid, Replika, Character.AI and Nomi each describe some form of call on their own pages (checked 24 October 2026); they differ in whether a face appears and how the minutes are charged.

Yes — as an avatar, not a recording of a person. On a Prelulu video call you see the character and hear them answer in their own voice, their expression shifting as they speak, on characters that offer video. Kindroid documents subscriber Live Avatar video from an image you upload. Replika's video is your own camera: it describes showing the app what you are seeing.

On Prelulu you can cut in mid-sentence and the reply turns with you. For other apps, check their own documentation: most store listings do not mention interruption, and a listing that is silent is not proof either way.

Only if the app uses your camera and you allow it. Replika describes sharing what you are seeing as a call feature. On Prelulu your camera stays off unless you turn it on, on calls that support it. An avatar answering you does not need your camera.

Most apps charge for call time in one of two ways: a subscription that includes some calling, or a credit balance that calls draw down per minute. Prelulu and Kindroid both use credits per minute. Compare what one month of the cheapest membership buys in minutes, and remember that top-up packs usually cost more per minute than a membership.

It depends on the app, and the claims are hard to compare from store pages. On Prelulu, chat and calls remember separately: each call picks up where your last call left off, and the Pinned memory you write is the one note both read. We did not run a side-by-side memory test.
