Best AI Girlfriend Apps in 2026–2027: What Each One Actually Does

Six AI girlfriend apps and websites compared: voice and video calls, making your own, and our price beside theirs. Checked October 2026.

Call an AI girlfriend

The best AI girlfriend app in 2026–2027 is the one whose default experience matches what you actually want to do with her. Text-first apps are the broadest; voice-first apps feel more present; only a few offer a live call where you see her face while she answers. We compared six apps on that axis, checked 24 October 2026, and put our own price beside theirs.

What each app actually promises

Prelulu: the live call is the product

Prelulu is built around one thing the other apps treat as an extra: calling her. You text first, then call the same character, and on a video call you see her and hear her answer in her own voice, her expression shifting as she speaks. You can cut in mid-sentence and the conversation turns with you. Text chat has a free daily allowance, no card required. Membership starts at $9.99/month on the web ($5.99/month billed yearly, a little more inside the iPhone and Android apps) for 7,200 credits — about 60 minutes of video on characters that offer it, or 180 minutes of voice. Credit packs cost more per minute.

Kindroid: the deepest custom character, with avatar video

Kindroid's listing leads with building one AI whose personality you author — a detailed backstory, key memories — and then "real-time voice calls". Its listing does not mention video, but its call guide documents Live Avatar video for subscribers, from an image you upload, charged in audio credits per minute on top of the call (checked 2026-10-24). If seeing her face matters, compare it against Prelulu directly.

Replika: the longest-running companion, with camera sharing

Replika's listing says it has been around since 2017 and offers "text, voice calls, and video", and describes the video as sharing what you are seeing. Its help center describes real-time recognition of your camera on the Platinum tier. So Replika's video is the companion seeing you, which is a different thing from seeing her.

Character.AI: range over realism

Character.AI is a library: millions of user-made characters, and you can author your own with a set voice. Its listing advertises calling but not live video. Choose it when variety matters more than the feeling that someone specific is on the line.

Nomi: memory first

Nomi's listing stakes its claim on memory — short and long term — and offers real-time voice messages, selfies, customizable backstories and several Nomis at once. Its website also says you can "hop on a hands-free call". If you want a companion who remembers details, that is its pitch.

Janitor AI: interactive stories

Janitor is built for romantasy and fanfiction readers who want to step into a story with bodyguards, arranged marriages and enemies-to-lovers. Its listing says nothing about calls or video. It belongs on this list because it is where a lot of romance readers start, not because it competes on presence.

Best AI girlfriend websites: no download needed

If you would rather not install an app, the question is whether the website does everything the app does. Prelulu does: at prelulu.ai you can text her and call her by voice or video in a desktop or mobile browser, on characters that offer video, and the same account works in the iOS and Android apps. For every other app here, open its website and check that calling works there before paying, because a website and an app do not always offer the same features. Browse AI girlfriends, anime-style AI girlfriends or free AI girlfriend chat to start in a browser.

Which one to pick

  • To see her face while you talk

    Start with
    Prelulu, Kindroid
Why (per each app's own pages, 2026-10-24)
Both document a moving face on calls; on Kindroid it is a subscriber feature.
  • To be seen through your camera

    Replika
Why (per each app's own pages, 2026-10-24)
Its listing describes sharing what you are seeing on video.
  • To hear her voice tonight

    Start with
    Prelulu, Kindroid, Character.AI
Why (per each app's own pages, 2026-10-24)
All three advertise live voice; Prelulu's free daily text lets you pick a character before you pay for a call.
  • One companion you design in detail

    Start with
    Kindroid
Why (per each app's own pages, 2026-10-24)
Its listing leads with backstory and key memories.

    Start with
    Janitor AI
Why (per each app's own pages, 2026-10-24)
Built for interactive fiction and slow burns.

What we could not check

Several apps that appear on other 2026 lists are not in this table. Candy AI, PolyBuzz and Chai had no official US App Store listing on 24 October 2026, and Talkie's publisher now lists a different app, Talkie Lab, so we left all four out rather than describe them from someone else's summary. If you are comparing against a list that does describe them, check whether that list says where its facts came from and when.

One more caveat that applies to every table like this, including ours: a store listing is marketing copy. "Real-time voice calls" can mean different things across apps, and none of us publish call-setup latency or how often a call drops. Treat the table as a shortlist, not a verdict.

FAQ

Questions, answered

There is no single best one, because the apps are built for different things. If you want a live video call where you see her and hear her answer, Prelulu is built around that. If you want a deeply customised character with real-time voice, look at Kindroid, which also documents avatar video for subscribers. If you want one long-running companion that can see your camera, look at Replika. Character.AI has the largest character library, and Nomi leads with memory.

On their own pages, checked 24 October 2026: Prelulu offers live video calls on characters that offer video, and Kindroid's call guide documents Live Avatar video for subscribers. Replika's video is your own camera — it describes showing the app what you are seeing. Character.AI's listing advertises calls but not live video. Where a source does not mention video, that is not proof the app lacks it.

Most are free to install with limits, then charge for calls, media or memory. Prelulu is free: texting is free every day with no card needed, and its paid lane is a monthly membership that funds a credit balance for calls. Credit packs exist as a top-up and cost more per minute than a membership, so compare the membership price, not the pack price.

Yes, on most of these. Kindroid and Character.AI let you create a character with its own backstory, and Character.AI lets you set its voice. Nomi supports customizable backstories and several Nomis at once. On Prelulu you can create a character too. Replika gives you one companion you customise over time.

They all claim some memory, and the claims are not comparable from the store pages. Nomi's listing makes memory its main claim. On Prelulu, chat and calls remember separately: each call picks up where your last call left off, and the Pinned memory you write is the one note both read. We did not run a side-by-side memory test, so we are not ranking them on it.

Both. Prelulu's AI girlfriends are original characters you can text free every day, call by voice and see face to face on a video call on characters that offer it, and its stories are written for romance readers. If you want the largest mixed library, Character.AI is the better fit. Prelulu's difference is the live call, not the size of the roster.

Most AI girlfriend apps are free to start and then charge a monthly subscription, credits for calls and media, or both. Prelulu is free to text every day; calls use credits. Membership starts at $9.99/month on the web ($5.99/month billed yearly, a little more inside the iPhone and Android apps) for 7,200 credits — about 60 minutes of video on characters that offer it, or 180 minutes of voice. Credit packs cost more per minute.

If you do not want to install anything, pick one whose calls work in a browser, not only in its app. Prelulu runs at prelulu.ai on desktop and mobile browsers, including live voice and video calls on characters that offer them, and also has iOS and Android apps. Several apps in this table have websites too; check whether calling works there before you subscribe.

Talking to an AI girlfriend or boyfriend is common: an MIT Media Lab study of r/MyBoyfriendIsAI described a community of more than 27,000 members in September 2025, where relationships more often began by accident than by looking for a companion. The partner is software playing a character, not a person; on Prelulu every character is fictional.
