Meta has announced Muse Realtime Avatar, which will let you video chat face to face with Muse, its personal AI agent, but as of October 23, 2026 Meta has given no public release date. If you want to video call an AI character today, Prelulu already does it: pick a character, tap Call, choose Video, and they answer you live, face to face, in their own voice. Prelulu works in your web browser and in the iPhone and Android apps. Its characters remember what matters to you in chat, and every call picks up where your last call left off. Here is what Meta announced, where Muse's avatar stands, and how the two compare.
What did Meta announce for Muse?
Muse is Meta's personal AI agent, and at Connect on September 23, 2026 Meta showed a way to see it: Muse Realtime Avatar. Meta introduced Muse on September 8, 2026 as an agent that "doesn't just answer questions, it actually does the work", rolling out "in the US on iOS, Android, and muse.ai", and you can also chat with it in WhatsApp. At Connect, Meta's event recap said Meta Superintelligence Labs is introducing Muse Realtime Avatar, which "turns Muse Realtime Voice into expressive, interactive avatars."
Meta's research post, Bringing Your Muse to Life, says the model "brings any character into a live conversation": a photographic portrait "responds through subtle expressions", a full-body illustration "gestures and shifts posture as it speaks", and animals and everyday objects can become expressive too. TechCrunch reported the same day that Muse users "will soon have the ability to conjure a distinct digital avatar for their particular agent" and video chat with it in real time, and that the feature was demoed onstage.
Meta also showed Muse Charm, which its Connect news post calls "a delightful and fun device built for you to talk and interact with your Muse". That post says "We'll have more to share later this year" and gives no price. TrendForce, citing Reuters on September 24, 2026, reported that Meta expects Charm to ship in time for the holiday season in December.
Is Meta's Muse avatar out yet?
Not as of October 23, 2026, as far as Meta has said publicly. Meta's posts introduce the avatar but give no date for when Muse users can video chat with it. The research post adds: "All examples in this blog post illustrate model capability and do not all reflect avatars available in the Muse app." On September 25, 2026, TechCrunch reported that Meta had opened an early access program for Muse's newest features, which you join by asking Muse to put you on the list. We found no Meta announcement of a general release by October 23, 2026.
Can I video call an AI character today?
Yes. On Prelulu you can video call an AI character right now, face to face, in your browser at prelulu.ai or in the iPhone and Android apps. Pick a character, say hello in chat, then tap Call and choose Video on characters that offer it. They look at you and answer in their own voice, with emotion in their face as they speak. You can speak or type, cut in mid-sentence to take the conversation somewhere new, and your own camera stays off unless you turn it on. The characters are AI, not human performers.
Start with Dante Marchetti, the ruthless heir to an empire built on fear who married you three months ago, or browse until a face and a voice catch you. AI video chat walks through a call step by step, and the realtime AI avatar page shows what you see on one.
How is Prelulu different from Meta's Muse avatar?
Today the biggest difference is availability: Prelulu's video calls are live now, and Meta's Muse avatar is announced. The other is focus. Muse is an assistant built to get things done for you, and its avatar gives that agent a face. Prelulu is built for the conversation itself: a cast of original characters made for companionship, romance and roleplay, each with a personality, a voice and a face, who remember what matters to you.

Which apps let you video call AI characters now?
Prelulu is built around it: live, face-to-face calls with characters you can text first. A few other apps document live video too. Kindroid's help center (updated October 13, 2026) says "Live Avatar Video Calls are available for subscribers." Our guide to AI characters you can video call compares more apps from their own pages, and AI FaceTime explains what a FaceTime-style call with an AI character is.
What to check before you pick an AI you can video call
- Can you call today? An announcement and an early access list are not the same as a Call button in the app.
- Does it answer you live? On a live call you speak, the character answers, and you can interrupt. A generated clip arrives after you ask, and you cannot reply inside it.
- Who are you talking to? An assistant that runs your errands, or a character with a story you come back to.
- Does it remember you? Tell it one small detail, come back the next day and see whether it comes up.
- What does a minute cost? Separate free text, any welcome credits and what each minute of calling uses.
