Start from a public link
A character.ai/character/… or character.ai/chat/… link supplies the original name, greeting, title, description and any visible definition. The name and greeting keep their fields, the title becomes the introduction, and the description and definition become background, without a model rewriting them. Fill in missing required fields and choose visibility before saving.
Continue one conversation from your export
Open the account export ZIP; it is read in your browser. Pick a recognized character and one conversation, then check its messages, speakers, order and available dates. Only that conversation is uploaded, to an owned character with empty history. Other chats stay on your device.
Know what does not come across
Hidden definitions, attachments, voice identifiers and unrecognized records are not recreated, and replies will not match the other service exactly. Saving enables text chat; no portrait, voice or live call is generated.

Questions before you begin
Request it in Character.AI's account settings. Its help page says processing can take 3 to 4 weeks, followed by an emailed download link that stays valid for 7 days. Keep a copy of the archive as your own backup.
One selected conversation can. You preview it and confirm before upload; message text, speaker order and available original dates are kept. Separate conversations are never combined, existing history is never overwritten, and private messages never become a public greeting or background.
Not verified yet. The reader accepts recognized records with clear character, conversation and speaker information, and reports missing or ambiguous data instead of guessing. It has been tested on export-shaped sample files, not yet on a real official archive.
Not yet. An imported character gets text chat. It has no generated portrait, voice or live avatar, so voice and video calls are unavailable for it. Character-creation pricing is shown before saving, and your first eligible public character is free to create.
