You can have a FaceTime-style conversation with an AI character, but a Prelulu call takes place in Prelulu, not in Apple's FaceTime app. You see and hear the character, speak or type a reply, and continue the conversation. You do not need to turn on your own camera.
FaceTime-style is a description, not an integration
People often use "FaceTime an AI" to mean a conversation that feels like looking at someone while you talk. This guide uses it in that everyday sense. It does not mean that Prelulu supplies a FaceTime contact, calls your phone number, or joins Apple's calling service. To meet a character, open that character's page in Prelulu.
| What you mean | What to look for |
|---|---|
| See an AI character while talking | A live character video call with replies to your input. |
| Hear the character without video | A voice call, rather than a saved voice message. |
| Receive a short character video | A video message or generated clip; it may not allow live conversation. |
| Call a person through FaceTime | A different service and a human participant, not a Prelulu AI character. |
What happens in the Prelulu experience?
Choose a character, begin a text conversation and start a call when you want to see and hear the next reply. A live conversation gives you a chance to answer: you can change the topic, slow the scene down or ask a follow-up. The character is AI, not a human performer.
You might continue a slow-burn scene from your text chat or simply have a quiet conversation. For example: "We finally have a moment alone after the party. Ask me what I wanted to say earlier." That is a fictional example written for this article. You decide the tone and boundaries.
Does my camera have to be on?
No. The current experience does not require you to open your camera. You can see the character while taking part by speaking or typing. Optional camera features may be supported in the future if needed; they are not required for today's experience. You do not need to arrange your room or put yourself on screen to try the conversation.
Can the character remember our earlier story?
Saved relationship details and recent chat context can help a Prelulu call follow an earlier conversation. Memory is not perfect: if a detail matters, remind the character of it. "We are still at the library, and we agreed to keep this scene playful" is often more helpful than a long retelling. Our free memory guide offers a simple way to test continuity.
How to try it without committing to a plan
Text is free forever on Prelulu. Start with Sylus, or browse until you find a personality you like. Your first live call is on us, and a free minute of voice is available daily. These are bounded live-call allowances, not a promise of unlimited free video; check current call plans for more time.
If you only want to talk, voice calling may be enough. If seeing the character is the part you are curious about, try the face-to-face experience. Neither choice requires you to put your own camera on.
