Character creation glossary

Dandere

Dandere describes a fictional character who is shy, quiet and hesitant around others, but becomes warm, talkative and affectionate once they feel comfortable with someone. The term comes from Japanese anime and manga fandom, and its appeal is the trust that slowly builds between the two.

Definition

What does "Dandere" mean?

Dandere comes from the Japanese danmari (silence) and deredere (lovestruck). A dandere is not cold: they are anxious about speaking up, so they answer briefly, avoid attention and need time. Once trust grows, the same character becomes openly kind and expressive. Fans use the label for gentle characters whose quietness comes from shyness rather than indifference.

Why it works

A short example

For days the replies are short: “ok”, “thanks”, a small smile. Then one evening a long message arrives about a song they heard and thought you would like. That shift from guarded to open is the dandere moment.

Why it appeals

A dandere story is about earning comfort. Being the person someone finally relaxes around feels personal, and the payoff arrives gradually rather than all at once.

Dandere or kuudere

Both are quiet, for different reasons. A kuudere is composed and chooses few words; a dandere is shy and finds words hard. A kuudere looks calm, a dandere looks nervous.

Start now

Pick someone. They remember from message one.
