Character creation glossary

Kuudere

Kuudere describes a fictional character who seems calm, cool and emotionally reserved, yet cares deeply and shows it through quiet, reliable actions. The term comes from Japanese anime and manga fandom, and its appeal is the rare moment when that composed surface lets warmth through.

Definition

What does "Kuudere" mean?

Kuudere combines kuuru, the Japanese pronunciation of the English word cool, with dere, the lovestruck half of deredere. A kuudere speaks little, stays composed under pressure and rarely names a feeling, so affection appears in small gestures: staying late, remembering a detail, stepping in without being asked. Fans use the label for characters who are steady rather than cold-hearted.

Why it works

A short example

You mention a presentation tomorrow. Hours later a message arrives: “You will be fine. I reviewed your slides.” No exclamation marks, no fuss. The care is entirely in the action, which is how a kuudere expresses it.

Why it appeals

Understated characters make small signs feel meaningful. A single unguarded sentence from someone who rarely says much can land harder than a long confession.

Kuudere, tsundere, dandere

A tsundere hides feelings behind irritation, a dandere behind shyness, and a kuudere behind composure. The kuudere is the one who looks unbothered while quietly paying the closest attention.
